"The Next Five Years are Mine": Looking Back at Patrick Beverley's Infamous Take

Welp… this is when trash talk gone wrong must be addressed.

Patrick Beverley told Stephen Curry back in 2019, “You had the last five years, the next five years are mine.”

From the very moment Patrick Beverley said that infamous statement, it was primed to age poorly. It ages even more poorly given the fact that he was traded twice in the 2021 offseason, being a member of the LA Clippers, the Memphis Grizzlies, and the Minnesota Timberwolves, in what seemed like seconds.

Now, someone needs to tell him to calm down with the trash talk. Because all that the Clippers have done during the two years since Pat Bev said that was a 3-1 series choke in the 2020 Conference Semifinals to the Nuggets and a Conference Finals appearance in 2021 where they lost to the Suns, the latter of the two being where Pat Bev reverted to a bench role, with his starting point guard spot taken by Reggie Jackson.

The Toronto Raptors had a saying in one point during their franchise history: “Stay hungry, stay humble.” Although Pat Bev is of the hungry type, he is the opposite of humble.

He is more of the trash talking type, as evidenced by that statement, along with him saying that he “just won a [expletive] championship” after the Clippers traded for Paul George and signed Kawhi Leonard. Besides, the “next five years” that he was talking about might actually belong to Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Even Curry knows that the “next five years” don’t belong to him, jokingly saying to Pat Bev at that, “Aren’t you 31?” So, it’s unreasonable to think that he would rule the NBA for the next five seasons.

These very words have haunted Pat Bev ever since the Clippers’ epic choke job in the 2020 playoffs. The internet always keeps the receipts, and this is no different.

He even denied saying that statement, telling the media that Steph is “like a brother” to him, and said that the two have known each other since college when they were roommates at a basketball camp.

However, CJ McCollum thinks differently from Pat Bev.

McCollum confirmed that he indeed said that on his podcast, “Pull Up with CJ McCollum,” saying, “The funny part of all this is that I remember once upon a time Patrick Beverley was talking to Steph Curry during the game at half court. And he told the Steph that you know you guys had your run the next five years are mine and he kind of fast forward and life always, I guess it comes full circle.”

McCollum doesn’t have the best relationship with Pat Bev, and not with the Clippers as well, so this was the perfect time for him to strike and he didn’t miss.

In the end, the internet remains undefeated.
