Nick Pivetta Pitches Five Scoreless Innings, Dominates in Red Sox Win Over Braves

Last week, Nick Pivetta became the first pitcher in MLB history to strike out 13 batters and allow zero runs in relief.

His dominance continued onto this week, as he held the towering Atlanta Braves scoreless in the five innings he pitched, leading the Boston Red Sox to a 7-1 win.

From the 2nd to the 6th innings, Pivetta gave up three hits and no runs while walking one and striking out five. Throwing 80 pitches, he got the win in relief after replacing opening pitcher John Schreiber.

Most impressively, Pivetta did this against the best team in the MLB, who were 64-34 entering the game, and have the lineup that leads the league in home runs, slugging, and OPS.

Ever since Pivetta got "demoted" to the bullpen, he has posted a 1.98 ERA through 41 innings, with the batters he is facing putting up a .128 batting average.

"He's an animal out of the bullpen," said Red Sox designated hitter Justin Turner on Pivetta. "He's been really good for us, pounding the zone, using three, four pitches, keeping the guys off balance. I don't know what happened, but since he moved to the bullpen, his fastball has been a whole different animal for him. He's ripping it and getting up in the zone and getting a lot of swings and misses underneath it."

The beginning of the game was delayed by an hour and 40 minutes because of heavy rain and lightning around the area.

The Red Sox were unfazed by the rain delay, as they are continuing to roll, improving to 54-47, having won three in a row, 14 of their last 19, and 21 of their last 33.

The scoring was highlighted by Masataka Yoshida's two-run home run with a shot to right field. The hit was his third of the night, where eight Red Sox batters finished with at least a hit. Rafael Devers had a pair of base hits and drove his 75th run of the season, the latter to take the Red Sox the lead, 2-1, and they never looked back.

Charlie Morton struggled through 80 pitches, with his night ending in the 4th inning, where he allowed four runs on six hits and five walks, striking out just one. In that sequence, Yu Chang reached on a two-out walk, stealing second and advancing on a throwing error before scoring on Jaren Duran's base hit that extended Boston's lead 3-1.

Devers drove another run on a base hit left field to end Morton's night, where he was replaced by Michael Tonkin.

The score could have been much worse for the Braves without the defense coming up with a triple play.

It all started with Michael Harris II catching a fly ball from Triston Casas, then throwing to first after Adam Duvall was going too far from the base. Then, first baseman Matt Olson threw the ball across the diamond to catch Yoshida out at third after he tagged up and tried to advance on Duvall's gaffe.

Though it stings for the Braves that they lost, losing six of their last nine won't affect them in the standings. Their 64-35 record is still the best in the MLB, and they have an 11-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East.
